In OS X (10.12.2) the connection will hold as expected with identical settings to iOS, which mystifies me further.

I've been on to apple support, and short of a full wipe we've tried and failed at everything.
I have tried various providers and protocols, I've even used apps from the providers designed to keep the VPN connected, but without fail the connection drops within a few minutes. The problem is that a short time (1 - 15 minutes) later the connection drops. The setup goes fine and the devices will connect to the VPN provider without issue. I've recently been trying to setup a VPN on my iPhone and iPad.
